BADER BRAVES YOUNG AVIATORS DAYS

BADER BRAVES YOUNG AVIATORS DAYS are an initiative of the DOUGLAS BADER FOUNDATION (Charity Commission Registration Number: 800435)

The hugely popular BADER BRAVES YOUNG AVIATORS DAYS are designed to give youngsters with limb impairment and other disabilities what is very often their first experience of flight in a light aircraft. Just to see the expressions on the children’s faces is evidence enough of the enjoyment and satisfaction they get from this new experience and their pleasure also guarantees a happy day for the whole family. As one mother pointed out; it is often unusual for the child with a disability to feel “important”, particularly to their able-bodied siblings. We try, when possible, to ensure that brothers and sisters get the opportunity to fly after all the BRAVES have flown so, at these events when their involvement is instrumental in siblings also having this exciting opportunity, BRAVES are definitely “key”. There can also be terrific psychological significance in the very act of flying. For a child who spends most of his or her life in a wheelchair particularly, it is exhilerating to be higher than other people; to be able to look down on the  world from the intimate vantage point of a light aircraft is often an incredibly liberating experience for them. One young flyer asked his pilot if he could learn to fly so that he could teach other people like him. A great accolade.

We have deliberately chosen airfields in different sectors of the British Isles and are continually looking to recruit more so that we can cover a wider area and offer more youngsters the wonderful opportunity of experiencing flight in a light aircraft. Wherever you live, we hope that there will be one quite accessible to you.

Experienced young pilots will undoubtedly recognise some of the names and venues and will hopefully spot a favourite (you’ll see that, due to the popularity of the venue, there are 2 at Caernarfon this year so be sure to reserve the right date).  You will also find some exciting new ones so please tell your friends and spread the word!

Please be aware that these Young Aviators Days are very popular and spaces are limited so be sure to contact us promptly to reserve your place and avoid disappointment.

We look forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new BRAVES there!

As always, The Douglas Bader Foundation is extremely grateful to all the participating Flying Clubs and Airfields for supporting BADER BRAVES by offering the use of their facilities. Also the pilots who so generously give their time and skill, their fuel and the use of their precious aircraft. Without your generosity and support all these wonderful and uplifting events simply wouldn’t be possible.
Thank you all.
