The Bader Cup – 2010. Grand Final Results

The Bader Cup Grand Final 2010 was played out at Alamos Golf Course in sunny, spring-like conditions. Entries were slightly up on the 2009 tournament. The competitors, and all involved, had a thoroughly enjoyable time  and, again, thanks to the generosity of one of our sponsors, the pleasure of staying for the duration of the tournament finals in the fabulous Tivoli Hotel Lagos.

We are, as always, immensely grateful to all our sponsors for the event, MONARCH AIRLINESGOLFE DO MORGADO and the TIVOLI HOTEL LAGOS. Without their extraordinary and ongoing generosity, the event and the invaluable funds  it raises for The Douglas Bader Foundation simply wouldn’t be possible.

Of course, the tournament wouldn’t even exist without its organiser, the seemingly tireless John Southwick. The Douglas Bader Foundation is greatly indebted to him and his partner, Pat, for yet another year of unstinting work in running the event. Another enormously successful Tournament which has again raised vital funds to enable the charity to continue its important work for amputees and other disabled people.

Thank you all very, very much.

Finally, many congratulations to Kate and Denis Thompson from Bedale Golf Club, the eventual winners and commiserations to all the brave runners up. Hopefully we’ll see you again for another attempt next year!

A REPORT BY JOHN SOUTHWICK

BADER CUP WINNERS 2010

Husband and wife from Bedale Golf Club in North Yorkshire are the proud winners of this year’s Bader Cup. Denis Thompson who plays off 9-handicap and Kate who plays off 25-handicap scored 45 Stableford points in the final round of the Greensome competition. Their score was 4 clear points clear from their nearest rivals Jack Marris and Barbara King from Whetstone Golf Club in Leicestershire.

The Bader Cup - 2010 Finalists at the Morgado do Reguengo Golf Club

The day was the culmination of the UK’s largest amateur mixed tournament, which boasts entries from over 450 golf clubs in the UK. The 2010 event alone raised £11,000 for the Douglas Bader Foundation. The money will go towards people with missing limbs and other disabilities and you will be able to see from the Website some of the valuable work that the Foundation undertakes.

Thanks go to the generosity of the sponsors  – Monarch Airlines, Morgado do Reguengo Golf and the Tivoli Lagos Hotel, plus all the regional final venues who give their golf courses over to the Foundation to organise the 12 regional finals. The only cost involved to the participants at the qualifying stage is the £10 per pair entry fee. This is the 23rd year of the tournament.

The Bader Cup - 2010. Finalists at the Tivoli Lagos Hotel

All twelve regional finalists battled it out on the final day in quite windy conditions, but sunny and mild weather, which was quite different from the practice round played the day before in windy and wet conditions, However, the scoring was higher than the scores in 2009.

Last year’s winners, mother and Son Craig and Carol Lewis from Palleg and Swansea Valley Golf Club, battled to retain the Bader Cup but only managed 5th place. It will be up to Denis and Kate Thompson who will return in 2011 to defend their title. To date no past champion has managed to defend the Bader Cup!

At the prize presentation dinner Keith Delderfield of the Foundation announced that the BADER SALVER an American Greensome Stableford Tournament for ladies would be re-launched with a new sponsor. Check out the website for details and entry forms.

Robin and I had a fantastic time in Portugal and want to thank you and Pat for your hospitality and organisation.

The Bader Cup is a great competition and it was fun to be part of the group of regional final winners.

Good luck to Keith in the wider Bader context and thanks to the sponsors too.

“John – many thanks for the photos. They’ve turned out quite well. Thank you to you, Pat and Keith for all your organisation.  We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will try our best for next year too.

Would be grateful if you would send me a form for the Ladies Bader Salver competition.  Can you send it to me directly and not to the club (address below).  I will put it before our Committee to see if we can participate in this event – I think a few of our ladies would be keen.

Many thanks again for all your hard work.

Kind regards.

Maria Giblin” (Competitor in the Bader Cup, 2010)

John and Pat,

A somewhat belated thanks to you for organising such a great event on the Algarve earlier this month. We both thoroughly enjoyed the whole occasion and with many people from Ashford keen to be in a similar position as we found ourselves in this year then we are sure there will be a bumper entry for the club competition. Although lightening rarely strikes twice we will be giving it our best shot to get to at least the regional final again!

A short article has appeared in the local *”Kentish Express” and is attached.

Once again many thanks and best wishes

David & Janet James
